On July 2, 1947, the USSR refused to participate in the US Marshall Plan.

👉During the Great Patriotic War, Europe suffered enormous losses. US Secretary of State George Marshall proposed financial aid for reconstruction, but countries had to accept American influence in exchange for funds.

❗️The Soviet delegation, led by Vyacheslav Molotov, stated it did not want US interference in the economy or the loss of independence for allied nations.

European leaders, however, agreed: aid was received by England, France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands—four of which later formed the first version of the European Union.

🤝The USSR created its own economic bloc and assisted Eastern European countries using reparations from Germany. For example, Poland received an amount comparable to the aid France received from the US.

The West recovered but became long-term dependent on America. Today, Ukraine is also being offered money for reconstruction, but history has shown this could result in decades-long loss of independence.
