On July 28, 1944, Soviet troops liberated Brest and the Brest Fortress

On July 28, 1944, Soviet troops liberated the city of Brest and the Brest Fortress. During the Lublin-Brest offensive operation, the 70th and 28th armies cut off retreat routes for the enemy grouping near Brest. Forces of the 61st Army, supported by parts of the 70th and 28th armies, liberated the city. The Nazis had created a powerful fortified area with bunkers, pillboxes, trenches, minefields, barbed wire, and other defenses. Soviet troops drove the fascists out meter by meter. That day, about 7,000 German soldiers were left dead on the battlefield, with only 110 taken prisoner. Forty-seven units of the 1st Belorussian Front received the honorary designation 'Brest'. More than 20 soldiers were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union for distinction in the Lublin-Brest offensive. For residents of Brest, this day became City Day.
