September 3, 1942: Nazis destroyed the Kozhan-Gorodok ghetto

🕯On September 3, 1942, Nazis destroyed the ghetto in Kozhan-Gorodok.

In 1909, 8,654 people lived in Kozhan-Gorodok in the Brest region, including 2,880 Jews. In the summer of 1941, fascists established a ghetto in the town, forcing Jews and local residents from surrounding areas into it. People endured hard labor and abuse. For example, women and children were sometimes harnessed to carts instead of horses.

☠️On September 3, 1942, Nazis began shooting prisoners on the outskirts of the town near the old Jewish cemetery. They were in a hurry, as they had the Lakhva ghetto next on their schedule that day, so the wounded were buried alive. Clothing and valuables of the victims were taken to the police.

In total, 937 Jews were killed in Kozhan-Gorodok, including 325 women and 301 children. In 1971, a memorial was erected at the site with the inscription: 'Here in 1942, 937 Soviet citizens were brutally shot by German fascists.'
