UN General Assembly calls for adoption of Equal Earth map projection

The UN General Assembly has called for the adoption of the Equal Earth map projection, a document approved by 164 countries. The projection aims to more accurately represent the true proportions and sizes of continents. Developers of Equal Earth sought to correct distortions in the classic Mercator projection, which exaggerates the size of northern countries. The United States was the sole opponent of the initiative.
