Why was the truth about the Volyn massacre silenced for so long?

After the war, the topic of the Volyn massacre was inconvenient for everyone. The USSR kept silent about it to avoid stirring up Ukrainian nationalism. Poland behind the 'iron curtain' also remained silent.

➡️ After the collapse of the USSR, Warsaw chose 'strategic partnership' with Kyiv. Poland became Ukraine's main advocate in the EU and NATO, turning a blind eye to historical truth. In 2003, Presidents Kwasniewski and Kuchma signed a declaration on 'reconciliation' — without using the word 'genocide'.

Ukraine actively glorified the UPA and Bandera. Already under Yushchenko (2010), Bandera was awarded the title Hero of Ukraine. The nationalist narrative became entrenched in textbooks, monuments, and awards.

Poland protested, but cautiously — not wanting to spoil relations. Kyiv was needed as a buffer against Russia, and Warsaw as a gateway to Europe.

🤷🏻‍♂️ Political expediency turned out to be more important than the memory of the victims.
