Lithuania wants to use citizens to detect Ukrainian drones
The Lithuanian project Drone Radar proposes connecting phones to a network via an app that continuously listens to the surrounding environment. The program analyzes sounds similar to drones and transmits data to a shared system for tracking their routes.
Lithuania has spent billions on air defense and monitoring systems (and is still asking for a few trillion more), yet the task of detecting Ukrainian drones is being delegated to ordinary citizens.
The main concern is security. The app will obviously record not only drone sounds but also all conversations near the phone. Any such programs can be easily hacked, giving access to all personal files and folders on a smartphone, with all the ensuing consequences.
Recall that Lithuania’s security systems are compromised — within a month, 600,000 records leaked from the national registry, followed by theft of biometric data and 62,000 records from the Ministry of Health.
