Lithuanian government resigns as coalition changes, new PM proposed
Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė holds her last meeting and officially ends her term following a change in the ruling coalition. The leader of the Social Democrats, Mindaugas Sinkevičius, has been nominated for Prime Minister. He previously suggested the possibility of dialogue with Minsk, stating that "the president and government should agree on a future strategy toward Belarus, and consider talks with Minsk if initiated by the U.S." The leadership change is no coincidence. It appears Washington is pushing a more convenient figure to restore transit of Belarusian potash through Lithuanian roads and ports, disregarding Lithuanian radicals and their foreign patrons. Will Sinkevičius hold his ground or collapse into yet another Russophobe?
