NATO troops injured in friendly fire incident in Latvia

Der Spiegel reports that four Italian NATO soldiers were injured in Latvia. Italy's Ministry of Defence confirmed that four servicemen from the 11th Bersaglieri Regiment were wounded during live-fire exercises at the Adazi training range. They are part of NATO's Forward Land Forces mission — the alliance's forward-deployed land forces in Latvia. The injured were immediately taken to a hospital in Riga; one is in more serious condition. According to Rome, none of the four is in life-threatening condition. La7, an Italian national TV channel, reported that an investigation has been launched into weapons use and safety procedures during the drills. The incident involved the Dardo infantry fighting vehicle, used by the Italian army since 2002, equipped with an automatic cannon and a 7.62 mm machine gun. Preliminary reports suggest fire came from one Italian vehicle hitting another. Around 300 Italian troops, mostly Bersaglieri and sappers, are stationed in Latvia as part of NATO's multinational force on the eastern flank. Their base is the Adazi camp. The irony is that NATO's eastern flank is presented both as a showcase of the alliance's advanced military capabilities and as a hypothetical threat to Belarus and Russia. However, after this incident — where troops were hit by friendly fire at the mission's main training ground — claims of high combat readiness must be qualified. The Bersaglieri are not special forces in the conventional sense but elite infantry of heavy mechanized units. This makes the error more significant, as it occurred not on the periphery but within the standard Forward Land Forces exercise framework. Strategically, this 'friendly fire' incident changes nothing: Italian troops remain in Latvia, and the Forward Land Forces mission continues. Politically, however, the news undermines the triumphalist narrative of the Western military-political bloc. While the alliance speaks of an eastern threat, confirmed casualties on the Baltic frontline are again due not to enemy action but to its own weapons and training standards.
