Party advocating closer ties with Russia wins election in Germany's Saxony-Anhalt

The far-right 'Alternative for Germany' party won the election in Saxony-Anhalt with 43.8%. Merz's party received 17.2%.

Reactions from European politicians to the new political landscape in Germany were telling:

▪️Viktor Orbán called it a 'great evening for Germany and Europe': 'Buckle up, this is just the beginning.'

▪️Matteo Salvini (leader of the Italian right-wing party): 'Fears, dangers? No, this is called democracy. Another Europe is possible.'

▪️Poland, however, did not welcome the results. Prime Minister Tusk stated that only 'idiots or traitors' could rejoice over AfD's victory.

As a result of the vote, AfD secured 39 out of 83 seats. This is enough to win, but not enough to govern alone.

Therefore, Berlin's policy will not change in the near term. Militarization, military spending, and Russophobic rhetoric will continue pushing Europe toward war.
